Yesterday Simon and I visited Sally Swann at JLT and found out why JLT chose to establish a base in Nottingham.
In Sally’s own words…
‘Why set up in Nottingham?‘ was the question repeatedly asked of Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) senior management based in London.
‘Because that is where Sally Swann wants to work!’ was the reply. Very embarrassing but also very gratifying, for me. Such supportive words also helped me to feel much more confident about starting a business from scratch in the midst of a deep recession.
JLT is a global risk and insurance adviser. ‘Client first’ is our philosophy. We centre everything we do on the client with a proposition based on deep knowledge, tailored advice and service excellence. I set up the East Midlands base in June 2012 after being courted by JLT for 2 years. I did not want to work in Birmingham or London but I did want to work for JLT. As they were keen for me to work for them, it was a question of what and where? Easy!
I firmly believed there was a gap in the East Midlands market for a truly corporate risk & insurance adviser. I also believe Nottingham is the jewel of the East Midlands.
We are proud to be based in Nottingham and to be one of the only providers outside of London of specialist M&A advice on insurance and due diligence.
Being part of Nottingham Means Business (formerly Invest in Nottingham Club) has been fantastic. We’ve had the opportunity to meet senior decision markers and to contribute to the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire growth story.
Based in Nottingham’s beautiful Creative Quarter, although not a creative business ourselves, we’re part of the entrepreneurial and innovative buzz that Nottingham has to offer.
So to revisit the initial question as to ‘why set up in Nottingham?’ – the answer really is, why would you go anywhere else?
