Sport and Nottingham – a blog by Richard Whitehead MBE

The Richard Whitehead people see is the Runner, the Paralympic Champion, the Athlete!

Yes I am those things but that is the finished article. To progress to the heights of world success – dedication, determination and desire, in addition to a little talent need to engrained into your make up.

The road to this success has not been a straight road with lots of twists and turns along the way. Barriers and obstacles have been the challenges I have had to overcome. Cometh the hour cometh the man is the real Richard Whitehead MBE, a person that is not scared of the fight and wants to be a driver in life, not a passenger!

Legacy to me is about ownership not gold medals or new venues. Athletes, volunteers and supporters need to engage with their communities and change their environment through their experiences of the ‘power of sport’.

I’m hopefully seen as an ambassador for sport for Great Britain but I’m a Nottingham lad striving for excellence, that’s proud of the sporting coulter I have emerged from.

Support networks in Nottingham have enabled me to have a platform for success. These building blocks are the foundations of who I am and what I stand for.

This experience I now pass on to fellow Paralympians/Olympians and also reach out to the local community to underpin what it means to be a champion.

Humanitarian work and working in the international world is very important to me to provide hope and opportunities to those less fortunate.

We’re privileged to have Richard as our guest speaker at our lunch on 26 September. Places are filling fast, to book please click here.
