SMS and NUAST partnership – a blog by Mark Goldby, Interest Group Chair for Manufacturing

Since holding our last manufacturing event at NUAST (Nottingham University Academy for Science and Technology) in Nottingham, I have been working closely with them to see how we can offer support.

On Thursday 14th May I was invited to present at the NUAST open evening. It was a great success and well attended by prospective students and their parents. The event was an ideal opportunity to announce the newly formed industry partnership between SMS and NUAST.

We are working with NUAST to help students gain the skills and knowledge they need in order to transition into the working world. Hopefully at the end of their education they will not only gain their qualifications, but have practical experience of the working environment, how businesses operate and had a chance to implement what they have learnt in the workplace.

Our plan is to offer students: Business/Manufacturing site tours, talks from our own Engineering experts, electronics projects based around subjects and topics relevant to their course and work experience days and placements.

We will be encouraging them to apply for our apprenticeship scheme once they have completed their studies and will be advertising any vacancies directly through the college. Those who choose to further their education at university can come to us for summer placements and also eventually apply for graduate/internship roles.

Both the team at NUAST and I share the same passion for investing time and resource into the next generation of talent. If you’re reading this, agreeing with me and want to know more then please contact me and I will be able to connect you directly to the academy.

Together we hope to bridge the gap between education and the working world to make the transition more seamless helping both students and employers in the long run.
