The Big EU Business Debate

With 23 June only five weeks away, Nottingham Means Business (NMB) and East Midlands Chamber (EMC) jointly hosted the Big EU Business Debate at Nottingham Trent University.

Kindly sponsored by Gleeds and Page Kirk LLP, the aim of the event was to debate both sides of the argument and give attendees the opportunity to quiz the panel on key issues.

Representing the ‘in’ campaign were Kate Godfrey, national engagement lead for Britain Stronger in Europe (BSiE) and Ian Baxter, owner of Baxter Freight.

Presenting the case for ‘out’ were David Buik, market commentator and supporter of Vote Leave alongside Nigel Baxter, managing director of RH Commercial Vehicles.

Europe 1L-R: John Wallis (Page Kirk), Anthony Cork (Gleeds), Ian Baxter (Baxter Freight), Kate Godfrey (BSiE), James Marshall (Gleeds), Scott Knowles (EMC), Nigel Baxter (RH Commercial Vehicles), Simon Gray (NMB) and Chris Hobson (EMC).

After a welcome from Scott Knowles and scene setting from Chris Hobson the debate was in full swing. It was informative, passionate and at some points heated, but drove home important messages that we will all need to take into account when making our decision on 23 June.

Europe 2The panel – L-R: Nigel Baxter, Ian Baxter, David Buik and Kate Godfrey.

Questions from the audience focused on the impact on business, immigration and the accuracy of financial forecasts in relation to a possible Brexit.

A big thank you to our sponsors, speakers and guests. To quote David Buik, ‘the day of reckoning’ is nearly upon us where we’ll be asked to make one of the most important decisions of our lives.
